New & Expectant Mothers

New & Expectant Mothers
The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999 include obligations for employers that protect the health and safety of new and expectant mothers who work.

As an employer in a small or medium sized business, it is pretty much a certainty that at some stage you will have employees who are pregnant or who have returned to work after having a child and may be breastfeeding. As you are aware, any workplace has its risks, and some of these can be heightened for new or expectant mothers: working conditions considered generally acceptable may no longer be so during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

About the Regulations

The Regulations stipulate the actions you should be taking as an employer to ensure the health and safety of new and expectant mothers who work.

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a
helpful guidance booklet for employees, which we have included in our Useful Documents library.

Did you know?

An employee does not have to be pregnant before you take action as an employer to protect their health and safety. You are required to conduct a risk assessment for all employees which should include any specific risks to females of childbearing age who could become pregnant.
