A workplace without some form of display screen equipment (DSE) is a rare sight these days, whatever the setting or the industry.

Whether an employee works with a traditional desktop computer, a laptop or a tablet, the use of such a device can result in discomfort, fatigue, pain or eyestrain if proper attention is not paid to taking sufficient breaks, to posture whilst using the device and to the positioning of the equipment.

About the Regulations

According to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), a large proportion of DSE Users report eye discomfort and aches and pains. The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 were brought in with the goal of protecting DSE Users. The guidance contained in them covers workstation setup and effective usage.

It can be advantageous as an employer to pay attention to the guidance contained in the Regulations. If your workforce is comfortable whilst going about its tasks, productivity will be boosted, and you'll have better staff retention.

Employers generally accept they have a responsibility in this area, however in practice it can be time consuming and sometimes intrusive trying to gather the information you need to implement any required changes. If you are facing this issue, PMR Solutions has developed a bespoke programme that could make all the difference.


Our Online Safety Compliance Review (OSCR) is a custom designed online DSE workstation assessment programme that enables employers to efficiently manage their DSE responsibilities.

Each employee has their own user account giving access to a questionnaire. This questionnaire will be formatted and branded to your individual Company requirements. Once completed, the results and recommendations are instantly available through a Moderator (Manager) that you have appointed within your organisation. You also receive a personal expert review by us to assist in the management of this process, so you are not left entirely on your own. Costs are competitive at a maximum of £10 per completed assessment.

Forms are available at all times, which means if there are any changes to a workstation or there is some other change to the working conditions, such as new lighting or a relocation, then the questionnaire can be completed again as required.

A one-to-one, personalised assessment is also offered. These can be beneficial if issues are raised during the OSCR, or for employees who suffer with specific diagnosed symptoms, such as back pain or RSI. The personalised assessment will help you as an employer to resolve such issues by offering an expert review of the worker's seating, desk and equipment as well as the working environment. In the majority of cases we will leave them feeling more comfortable.

The assessment is not medically based but one that applies general ergonomics and workstation arrangement principles.

 

Did you know?

The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations require you as an employer to assess the health and safety of all workstations used by your employees. This includes any workstation equipment such as a desk or chair that you have provided to home workers.
